Gibbes & LeConte Family History

Revised September 20, 2023

Researching my wife's paternal lineage, this is a genealogical summary of everything I have found in the work of Susan Gibbes Robinson, the writings of A. Mason Gibbes Jr. and what I have uncovered through Internet searches and contacts with other family members known to me. (See bibliography at the end hereof.) Because of the proud relationship to Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, the LeContes are shown which connect the families. And the connection through the Warners are shown that bring about a relatiionship to our 1st President, George Washington. As with my other genealogy research, I have chosen to start with those who first immigrated to the American colonies, where possible. In the Generation numbering, I have begun with {2} so that the generations would align with my other sections.

I should add that the Crown Colony of Carolina was split into North and South Carolina in 1712, and the name of the famous South Carolina coastal city was changed from Charles Town to Charleston in 1783. Plus, it may be noted that between 1800 & 1868, "counties" in SC were renamed "districts," but I will continue to use the abbreviation "Cty" to keep down the confusion.

Also, some of these ancestors lived in early New York which was founded in the early 1600's by the Dutch as New Netherland Colony, which I abbreviate as NN below. It was taken over by the British in 1664 and renamed New York. Also, in what became Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1691, several immigrants settled in the Plymouth Colony.

As to the given names of individuals below, if it is known that they were typically called by anything other than their first given name, it is indicated by either underlining or by quotation marks.
